Who is an au pair
An au pair is a foreign person who is single, without children and who is aged between 18 and 27. They come to the UK or another country to study the foreign language, to live with the host family and care for their children, to help with domestic chores and to attend language courses. However, there are no restrictions on the age of au pairs for EU citizens. Au pairs usually come to stay with a family for 6-12 months sometimes longer, up to 2 years. Lots of them are students, coming only for summer from June to October to improve their English and help families with childcare during the summer school holidays.
The family treats the au pair as a member of their family and provides her/him/them with their own bedroom, full board and weekly pocket money (minimum £60). The au pair helps with childcare and domestic chores (25-40 hours a week) plus 2 evenings babysitting.
